Sun Valley Idaho

Sun Valley Idaho is nestled in the Great Wood River Valley, surrounded by splendid forested mountain slopes and a beautiful network of pristine streams in the heart of Idaho. This mountain resort hotspot is named for the long, brightly filled days of summer when 15 hours of constant sun bathes the city. The city's aesthetic appeal and world class recreation converge to make Sun Valley Idaho the supreme all season tourist stop for people from all over the world.

Sun Valley Idaho itself is home to just under 1,500 residents, and of the mostly million dollar homes that dot the valley, only about a quarter of them are occupied year round. The area came to the attention of Hollywood elite in the 1930s around the time Ernest Hemingway called the serene area his home. Ever since, the rich, famous, and powerful have been snatching up Sun Valley real estate and using it for seasonal getaways and second homes.

Sun Valley Idaho is usually thought of with the surrounding cities of Hailey and Ketchum. The area is an outdoor recreation mecca, where tourists and visitors enjoy skiing, hiking, trail riding, fishing, golfing, biking, and ice skating. Sun Valley is best known for the Sun Valley Resort, the site of the world's first chairlift, constructed in 1936. Sun Valley is the original ski town, where you'll find some of the world's best skiing at Bald and Dollar Mountains. “Baldy” is the resort's famous giant, with 3,400 vertical feet of finely groomed plunges. Well known and praised for its lengthy runs of constant gradient and varying levels of difficulty without wind, it's no wonder that Baldy is often considered one of the better ski mountains in the world. There are 75 runs in 2,054 acres of skiable acres, serviced by 14 ski lifts. Bald Mountain has more uphill capacity per skier than any other ski area. Dollar Mountain is a treeless ski hill used by beginner and intermediate skiers.

The area's skiing and snowboarding is just one of the many sports this all seasoned resort town is known for. The fly fishing in the valley is phenomenal, with abundant opportunities along the Big Wood River, Silver Creek, Big Lost River and the Little Wood River. For those who love to pull on waders and get in hip deep in one of these pristine trout streams, the season begins each May and is accompanied with awe inspiring scenery.

Besides blue ribbon fishing, people hike and bike along more than 30 miles of paved trailways and golf to their heart's content at the Sun Valley Resort, where you'll find 45 holes over 3 distinctly different and excellent courses all with a spectacular mountain setting.

Ice skating is another Sun Valley Idaho favorite. Home to one of the world's few year round rinks, you can take part in Sun Valley Ice Shows, skate rentals, and group & private lessons. Each year some of skating's biggest names take to Sun Valley's ice.

The area caters to year round residents with both public and private schools. The Wood River High and Middle Schools are located in Hailey, Hemingway Elementary school is in Ketchum, Hailey Elementary School & Woodside Elementary School are located in Hailey, as well as Bellevue Elementary School in Bellevue. The College of Southern Idaho is located in Twin Falls, Idaho, but it operates a satellite program in Hailey for those interested in taking adult education courses or obtaining an Associates of Art degree.
