When it’s time to head out a bit further, Lucky Peak Lake sits just along the outskirts of Boise and features a water fun galore! The Lucky Peak State Park, Discover Park Unit, is a delightful location that features wide open grassy areas that make for an ideal day of hanging out in the shade with waterfront views or perhaps packing a picnic basket and enjoying a meal. The park boasts a scenic view of Lydle Gulch and the Lucky Peak Power Plant, where every now and again, the notorious ‘Rooster Tail’ display is presented. The ‘Rooster Tail’ has become popular as the tremendous amount of water released from the dam to alleviate pressure is skyrocketed into the air as the water sprays jet from a bucket that directs the flow. This event open happens every few years, so when it does occur, many residents and visitors to the area enjoy checking it out and possibly even get misted by the spectacular water display. Be sure to consider adding it to the list, as this is one that is fun for all!

Also located in the vicinity along ID-21, right about the starting point for the Boise River Greenbelt, sits the Lucky Peak Park Sandy Point Unit. The Lucky Peak Sandy Point Unit is a fantastic place for all to enjoy as it boasts ample room for parking, white-sand shores, refreshingly cool waters, and the options for relaxing by the water and a fun-filled day in the sun. This spectacular destination is spotted with mature tree life for when the temperatures warm up and make for an excellent place to retreat from the sun in the colling shade. There are picnic tables, BBQs, paddleboard rentals, as well as various additional amenities to make for a great day. Many visiting either of these locations may notice the ‘Keep Your Forests Green’ quote that is boldly written alongside Lucky Peak Dam, which is another neat fact about this area that most visitors and newcomers wouldn’t expect. It’s a cool addition to Boise that keeps it unique and shares the passion that goes with being outdoors.

There are additional outdoor activity opportunities right up the road, just off ID-21 and S. Lucky Peak Dam Road. Crossing the dam will lead to the option of heading over to Foote Park, the turn is located at the Lydle Gulch Trailhead, which continues to the park. Lydle Gulch Trailhead is also an option if heading into the foothills sounds like the ideal adventure. There is also the stunning Lucky Peak Reservoir, which is ideally complimented by the rolling foothills. If wanting to spend a day at the Reservoir, there are a few choices as far as destinations in this section of the Reservoir that may be just the fit for what you’re searching for. Barclay Bay offers a boat ramp with abundant parking (this area can get quite busy in the warmer months). There is also Middle Cove, which boasts covered picnic tables and a small beach area, which is great for making sandcastles! There is also a moderately sized cove where people like to hang out on the rocks, swim and enjoy water activities. And last but not least is Turner Gulch, which is also a fantastic opportunity to hang out by the water in a location that is a bit tucked away from the business that may be happening at the other options. This area is popular for fishing, swimming, and hanging out by the water’s edge, as well as there is a nearby dock and boat ramp. All of the destinations listed are worth checking out at some point in time. If avoiding the crowds is the goal early Spring and late Fall is when this area is sparsely populated compared to the summer months.

There is also the Lucky Peak Reservoir View Point for a quick stop that isn’t as time invested as the other could be and offers remarkable views that seem to go for miles overlooking the water and the foothills and makes for great photography opportunities.
