Located in south central Idaho, Gooding county was created in 1913 from a partition of Lincoln county and named for the governor and US senator Frank R. Gooding. The county is on the plains of the Snake river. Gooding county is largely an agricultural area. It includes some of the richest irrigated land in the country, which is used to grow a number of different crops and produce livestock. It is also one of the largest areas for trout farming in the United States.

The county seat and largest city in the county is Gooding. Its major economy is cheese production, including Idaho's largest barrel cheese factory. Education is important in the county as such there are some great choices for schooling. Wendell Middle School received the Idaho Education Award in 2005. Gooding county properties are not far from many great sights. The Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument contains eight unique fossil species. Located near the scenic Thousand Springs, Hagerman is a common tourist spot for boating and fishing.

Compared to much of Idaho, Gooding county has mild weather. Outdoor activities can be enjoyed throughout the year including such things as, camping, hiking, recreational sports and golf. The mostly flat land of the county make it ideal for winter cross country skiing and snowmobile travels.
