Your Idaho mid Winter Maintenance Checklist
As an Idaho homeowner, a maintenance routine is an important part of keeping your home in tip-top shape. One of the easiest ways to keep on top of it, is to spread out the items on your home maintenance checklist into manageable increments.
January is the first full month of winter and the time when many people make renewed efforts to start fresh and clean with a list of resolutions. A good item to stick on that list is to start up with a monthly checklist for your Idaho home maintenance needs. January carries with it a unique roster of to-do's brought on by the lower temperatures that are integral to maintaining the health of your home.

Because Boise, Meridian, Eagle & Nampa experience all four seasons, you can expect everything from hot to cold weather and sunny to cloudy days. Our region is a dry climate, so it doesn't get too cold, but it seems that the start of 2013 has forgotten the rules of our temperate high desert climate, but it also ushers in one of the most important items on your January's maintenance checklist:
Prevent pipes from bursting due to freezing and thawing. If practical, be sure and insulate any pipes exposed to the cold. Seal up any leaks that allow the cold air to seep in, particularly around dryer vents and pipes and where electrical wiring enters the house. Search for uninsulated water supply lines in areas of your home such as the attic, garage, basement or crawl spaces.
It can be helpful to turn your faucets on just a trickle to relieve pressure in the pipes, and it's also important to know where your home's water shut-off valve is located in case a pipe does burst. And if you're leaving for any amount of time, be sure and keep your home at least 55 degrees.
Also, replace the filters in your HVAC system. Depending on your filter, these should be cleaned or changed monthly during peak seasons.
Vacuum heat vents.
Inspect and test any smoke and carbon detectors in your home.
