Winter Sports in Idaho

Idaho is a spectacular place to live if you are a fan of snow. Winter typically brings with it a good amount of the fluffy, white stuff. Many people who love to ski, snowboard, snowshoe, and otherwise enjoy winter sports will even travel to areas in Idaho to enjoy their time in the snow. For many Idahoans, however, the locations that they typically go to for their winter activities are the places that are within an hour from them. There are plenty of other places to explore in the wonderful state of Idaho, so it may be worth a trip or two to check out the other gorgeous scenery.

Sticking close to the Treasure Valley is the well known Bogus Basin Ski Resort. There are many aspects to this amazing location that many people utilize, and many that may not be as well known. Of course, this mountaintop winter wonderland is well known for it’s several hills for skiing and snowboarding, as well as the 91 trails including 78 named ski trails that are well groomed for your safety. If you are the type who would like to spend a bit more time on the mountain, then the Alpine Yurt may be a fantastic way to do so. This intriguing camping experience is offered by Bogus Basin and requires that anyone staying here in the winter time throw on some snowshoes and pack in their gear (skiing in is fine as well). The Yurt is a rather large option for anyone who want to change things up from igloos or tents in the winter, and can sleep up to twelve. It is furnished with a three burner stove and bunk beds as well as a futon, though sleeping bags must be packed in with other gear. No doubt, this would be a vacation for the books. As far as equipment for your excursions on the mountain, equipment can be rented at the lodge, though make sure to dress properly for the cold and wind (and occasional chilly meeting with the ground) as skiing and snowboarding can make a cold temperature seem colder. All in all, this resort is a place where adventure awaits. This season, Bogus is getting ready to celebrate it’s 75th year of operating, so if you are a big fan, head on up and celebrate the anniversary of the resort with them! Bogus Basin plans to open up for the season on November 27, but as always, will open depending on the safety and weather conditions.

Many people who live in the Treasure Valley are also familiar with a little town tucked away in the mountains known as McCall, Idaho. Brundage Ski Resort is a great place for those who love fresh powder and wide ski slopes. One fun event that they have available at Brundage is called snow-tubing. This activity combines the enjoyment of sledding with the speed of skiing. Tubing is not just like regular sledding, however. Just like many water park rides that involve sliding in a tube, snow tubing at this resort includes tracks called “lanes” that allow guests to slide and catch some air on pre-built half-pipes. If you have never learned how to ski or snowboard, never fear- Brundage has you covered. Lessons are available for people of all ages (well, after they turn three). As with Bogus, this ski resort offers rentals of equipment, but as an added bonus, they also sell equipment with a “demo” rental payment. This means that if you purchase any skiing or snowboarding equipment on the same day as you rent, you will be able to subtract the price of the rental from your purchase. This is a great program because it gives you the opportunity to test out products before you commit to buying them. Brundage is a great place to check out if you are looking for a new place to ski, snowboard, or snowshoe, and it’s not too far from the Valley.

Heading a few hours east from Boise and up into the impressive Sawtooth Mountains will bring you to the pleasant city of Sun Valley. This area is well known for it’s dazzling views and charm, plus it is a great location to enjoy the snow. There are a few choices for the ski and snowboarding enthusiasts- Dollar Mountain and Bald Mountain. Information and passes for both mountains are available at the Sun Valley Recreational Center. One of the perks of heading to Sun Valley to enjoy your ski trip is that the whole city will be there with open arms. Winter brings a wide array of different activities for visitors to the area. A sleigh ride is a sparkling way to enjoy an hour with scenery and snow falling all around while watching the sunset. On some evenings, there is even a chance to take a trip in the open sleigh to a dinner at the Trail Creek Cabin. If this is something that sounds like an experience you cannot miss, be sure to reserve a spot ahead of time as the restaurant is quite the popular place to dine. Sun Valley is also one of the greatest places to treat yourself to a spa day. What could be better than a day on the slopes, then a nice relaxing massage session or acupuncture treatment to soothe your aching muscles? There are many other incredible options available to people looking to spend their vacation time skiing in the Sawtooths, all it takes is a little bit of time and planning to put together the perfect trip for you.

Winter is a great time to get out and enjoy snow sports, plus it can be an unbelievably fun season if you have the right trip planned. Grab your snowboarding gear and check out a new mountain! It’ll be a great change of pace.
