What should I do with my extra room? 8 ideas to make that spare room work for you!

So, you bought a new house and you have a spare room, an extra room, or just some space in your house you want to make use of? Well, never fear, your new home problem is now going to be your favorite part of this house! Here are 8 ideas that you can use to make that space work for you. So strap in!

Getaway Room/ Meditation Chamber/ Zen Room

Now, this is one of our favorites. It is the Zen Room! Well, for all intents and purposes, it can be called the getaway room, the meditation room, or anything else for that matter. It doesn’t really matter what you call it, the purpose is the same: it is a room to help you relax. Put in your favorite scented candle, some potted plants, some soft lighting, and something comfy to sit or lie on.

Home Theater

If you aren’t into the relaxation chamber, then maybe you will like our home theater! Just get yourself a great couch, a large TV or projector, and you are in business! Now all you need are some movies and some snacks and you are ready to go. It will be the perfect place to take friends for a movie night or to sit back and enjoy your favorite foreign flick!

Game Room

Do you like Ping-Pong? What about billiards? Racket ball? Or any other game for that matter? Well, if the answer is yes, and you have the space and funding, why not turn your spare room into a room where you can enjoy your favorite games! It is a great idea for parties and gatherings!

Hobby or Craft Room

Do you have a hobby that needs its own space? That could be the perfect idea for your space. Say you like calligraphy and you don’t want to have to pack up your dip inks and fountain pens for when company comes over? Or you like practicing a martial art and you don’t want your punching bag in the living room? Well, if so, then the hobby or craft room is the answer! You can set up your paintbrushes, or even your musical instruments for that matter. That way your hobby has its own space that is away from the rest of the house.

Parlor

Want a place for you and your friends to enjoy a drink or some light refreshments, then maybe a parlor is right for you! This provides you with a space to receive guests, entertain, and just enjoy your time. Now, this is best utilized if your spare room is near the front door. It would weird to take your guests through the house to the parlor on the other side so you could make sure everything on the inside of the home was ready for them. It just doesn’t work. Unless of course you receive them through the back which can be achieved by adding a second entrance, and walkway, from the front to the back.

Library

If you are a voracious reader, a bibliophile, or just someone who loves the sight of books, then the library is sure to be the route for you to go. You can build shelves, or put shelves into the walls, and line that room from top to bottom with your favorite novels, biographies, and other books. Not to mention it will be a great place for you to read, relax, or socialize if you want.

Home Office

If you are lucky enough to have a job that allows you to work from home, then the home office is a natural fit! You can set up your computer, your mini fridge, and anything else you might need and viola, you are done. Now you can do your work and leave it where it is when the day is over. No more working at the kitchen table, from your bedroom as you fight taking a nap mid shift— you have an office!

Now, remember, if you are going to receive clients there, you will want to make sure it has room for them as well. So, opt to put in a few chairs and maybe a water cooler as well to keep them comfortable.

Home Gym

If you need or want exercise, don’t get a gym membership that you’ll have to pay for over and over again every month. Save your money and buy yourself the equipment that you’ll need. This idea is also great for those of you that exercise but don’t want to deal with traffic. You can now save time (along with that money you saved earlier) and get your workout finished in a flash!

Now, we know what you’re thinking: but wait, there’s more … right? Well, yes there is. There are plenty of great ideas on line that you can search through until you find the one that fits your spare room and your needs— unless our list had one you liked.
