Most individuals that are looking to buy Idaho real estate are also interested in recreation and other interesting sites in the area where they buy. One such site is Island Park, Idaho, which is tucked into the corner of the state, next to Yellowstone Park, where Wyoming and Montana meet Idaho.
Island Park has only a few hundred residents, but is known for having the longest main street anywhere in the US. Only 500 feet wide, it stretches for 33 miles along US route 22. This unusual shape for a town dates back to 1947 when the town fathers elected to create the town to avoid the liquor laws of the State of Idaho. At that time the state law did not allow the sale of alcoholic beverages outside the city limits of any town. Because there were several lodges and other recreational facilities in the area just west of Yellowstone Park, the sale of alcohol was deemed to be important to the ongoing development of the area. Creating the town allowed them to offer drinks at their establishments. The strange shape of Island Park, and the longest Main Street in the country, was the result.
The geological history of the area has created a unique landscape. The town sits in two ancient calderas that are in a long path of geological structures which created the Snake River Valley. The path through the mountains channels precipitation into the area and results in a wonderful environment with lakes, clear steams and green hills covered with pines. It is what one commonly thinks of when you imagine the alpine meadows of the Rocky Mountains. For those looking at Idaho real estate for sale, this area of the state should be high on anyone’s list of Idaho properties.
Lying at an altitude of 6,100 feet, the Island Park area has approximately three times the annual rain as surrounding areas at a similar altitude.
The recreational activities in the surrounding area are very attractive, including some of the best fishing in the west, hunting, hiking and camping. Properties for sale in this area can not only be a full time home, but can also be a perfect second home get-away. Looking for a second Idaho home for sale? Look no further than the Island Park area of Idaho.
