Protection, Preservation, Peace of Mind... Yup, There's An App For That

Motion Sensor

In this day and age, things are unpredictable. It's no secret that bad things happen, whether you are expecting it or not. Imagine that you are on vacation, you and some friends are on a road trip and you left your new home unattended. While you are out having fun and living the dream, the unthinkable happens, your home is broken into. The perpetrators have barged in, ransacked your place, damaged your things and taken your valuables. It is the worst thing that anyone could come home to. Whether you are on a trip or just out for the day, no one wants to find their home in this condition.

Luckily there is a solution to this problem- a home security system. Now there are several different types of security systems and the one that is right for you, may not be the one that is right for the Jones's down the street. There are three main different types of security systems- the local alarm system, the monitored alarm system, and the new wireless security system. Which ever type you choose, if you want to protect your home a security system is a must.

Let's start with the local alarm system. You can buy these for various prices mostly starting around $100. The way they work this: a network of sensors spider web their way around your home connecting all the entrances to your home to the central command console (more expensive systems will have motion detectors and even cameras as well). Now, when the system is armed and a door or window is opened, the system is tripped, and after thirty or so seconds, will sound a loud and scary alarm to alert you or your neighbors to the intrusion. This will continue until the correct password or key code is entered into the command console. If the correct password or key code is entered before the alarm sounds it will deactivate and the system will be disarmed. This allows you to arm and disarm your own system without scaring your neighbors.

Now there are pros and cons to these types of systems. The pros are: it's inexpensive, it's simple and it gets the job done. The cons however are: it could be set off if you are not fast enough, and there is a possibility that no one will hear the alarm.

Police CarTo remedy that situation, security companies have come out with monitored alarm systems. These are, in essence, the same as the local alarm system, but instead the system is connected, not only to your control console, but also to a command center provided by your local provider. There is a team of trained staff on duty 24/7, charged to watch for alerts. If your alarm system is tripped, the command center will be notified and they will transfer your information to the police. This way, you always know that there is someone watching over your home. The only cons to these types of systems is the fact that you may not know that something has happened until you see the police cars surrounding your home. The command center may try to contact you, but you can never be sure.

That leads to the latest addition to the home security arsenal- wireless security systems. If you are the type of person that wants to be able to know what's going on at your house when you are gone, this is for you. It combines all the features of the other systems, but it is all linked to your phone or mobile device.

This is how it works. The app on your device will give you alerts when the system is armed. If someone comes in or out of your home, you'll know. You can even give each person who will be coming and going a different code so that you will know exactly who is there. This way you know if your plants really did get watered, or if someone threw party in your house, while you were away.

Another benefit to the system is that you can arm and disarm your system remotely from the app. That way, if you forget to arm the system when you leave, with the tap of a button you can arm the system and rest easy that everything at home is safe and sound.

The cons to this type of system are that you may need to be a bit tech savvy to use it, you may become obsessed at checking on your home and not be able to focus on where you are, and lastly, it is the most expensive option on the market.

It's up to you though, what does your home need? Once again, the system that is right for you and your needs is different than anyone elses and you need to do what is necessary to protect your home.
