Light Options

Incandescent LightingAt least twenty-five percent of Idaho household's energy bills are attributed to electric lighting.  That can add up to quite a bit when one stops to consider the demand and the rising cost of energy.  So what can Idaho residents do to save on their electric bills?  What is the most energy efficient way to provide lighting for an Idaho home?

Energy Efficient Light Bulbs
There are two kinds of energy efficient light bulbs available for homes: Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs) or Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs).

CFLs last ten times longer than incandescent light bulbs and are four times more efficient.  In addition CFLs use only 1/3 of the electricity enabling Idaho residents to save money.

Manufacturers have expanded the use of LEDs by clustering them into as many as one hundred and eighty tiny bulbs per cluster encased with lenses to diffuse and spread the light into wider beams.  LEDs last ten times longer than compact fluorescents and much longer than average incandescent bulbs.  They do not have filament and hold-up well in terms of durability.  They do not cause heat build-up and are more efficient than incandescent bulbs, using only two to ten watts of electricity.

Energy Efficient Lamps
The most common type of lighting is incandescent.  They are inexpensive to buy, but due to their short life span they are inefficient and expensive to operate. Fluorescent lamps require only twenty-five to seventy-five percent of the energy that incandescent lamps consume, and they last ten times longer making them more efficient.

Individuals will discover that high-intensity discharge lamps can save them seventy-five to ninety percent on energy bills.  They provide the highest efficiency ratio of light produced to energy consumed and have the longest service life when compared to other electrical lighting sources.

Natural Lighting

Outdoor solar lighting is simple to install, and collects solar energy into a battery by day to shine throughout the night, and they are virtually maintenance free. Solar outdoor lights are something you will find very common in many communities.  Sodium lamps are the most energy-efficient form of outdoor lighting.

Natural Lighting
Electrical lighting cannot compare with natural lighting in appearance and efficiency.  With proper placement skylights and bay windows can save home owners significantly on energy bills because they will decrease the need for electrical lighting, and skylights not only add a touch of class to a home, but studies show they can also contribute to an individual’s overall health and feeling of well-being.  In addition, natural light eases eye strain that can occur by eyes continually having to adjust to artificial light.  Natural lighting is preferred by a majority of people.
