For some running can be an intimidating prospect. We all have at least one friend or family member that’s really into running. They train everyday, running for miles, while working to shave precious seconds off of every mile. They run in marathons and 5k races. They are really into running. Sometimes, they try to convince you to go running with them or to come. So far, you’ve only fallen for that a couple of times, and it wasn’t a fun experience. They didn’t slow down their run, or wait for you, and they probably poked and prodded you the entire way, trying to get you to go faster.
That kind of experience might have turned you off from races. If it did, there’s really no surprise. You may have to work your way up to running that 10-minute (or faster) mile, and it’s not something you do the first time. Fortunately, there’s a great 5k that happens all across the country that’s about having fun and running. Throw the stopwatch out the window (at least for now), and don’t worry about who crosses the finish line first. Instead, you’ll be throwing color and having the best time while running you’ve ever had.
The Color Run is a fantastic 5k race, that’s not a race. What the Color Run is is a fantastic way to break into running without breaking yourself. It’s a no pressure race, where the only goal is to cross that finish line colored from head to toe with the brightly colored cornstarch powder. Sounds simple enough, right? If you want to ease your way into running, the Color Run is a great place to start, but there are some things you should do to get prepared for a running lifestyle.
· Like with any new exercise, it’s always important to check with your doctor first. It’s especially important if you’ve never run before. You’d rather find out before hand if there’s anything wrong, or anything you should be aware of while running. Talking to your doctor will ensure there aren’t any surprises.
· A shoe isn’t like any other shoe. While it may be tempting to skip the lines, and human interaction, by shopping online, you could end up with a shoe that isn’t right for you. Unlike normal shoes, where you can deal with a bit of discomfort (although you really shouldn’t), running shoes need to fit you correctly. Otherwise, you could seriously hurt yourself. Go to a specialist store, and get help finding the right shoe for you. A professional can help you find the right shoe, with the right fit, and answer any questions you might have.
· Like any exercise program, you’ll need a plan. If you want to get into running, the Color Run is a great starting point. It’s an easy race, and a lot of fun, but you’ll still want to make a plan to work your way up to it. Not many people just start running a 5k over night, and creating a plan will help your body, and your mind, prepare for the run.
· Start small. If you haven’t run before, or if it’s been a really long time, start slow. Just walk. Work your way up to jogging and then running. This is where the Color Run can work as well. You can walk, jog, or run the entire race. While you have a blast, you’ll also get a feel for what that kind of distance will be like.
· Have a buddy! Working out alone can be discouraging. If you have a friend with you, you can encourage each other and keep each other motivated. Plus, it might be nice to have someone to talk to, so you aren’t just running by yourself.
· Don’t forget to stretch before and after every run. Stretching helps limber your muscles beforehand, while also helping them cool down afterward. Stretching is important, so don’t forget!
Whether you want to get ready for the Color Run, or you want to use the Color Run as a starting point for running, remember that you need to be prepared. There are plenty of resources available to you, so use them. It can take work to build up to being able to run distances. Don’t push yourself too hard. And remember, have fun!
