A Rock on End

Idaho WildflowersBalanced Rock Park is situated near of Buhl, Idaho. It is about a half hour drive from Boise, Nampa and Eagle Idaho. It can be found in the Salmon Falls Creek Canyon. The park was created near the majestic Balanced Rock. This rare rock formation is more than 48 feet high. The basalt rock was created by the powers of the wind and stands on an extremely small base. The picnic area in the adjacent park area is a wonderful spot to stop and eat, so be sure to bring along a packed lunch with you when you go. You will also want to take your still or video camera with you. The photos will be incredible.

The Park
This park is one of the narrowest in existence and is comprised of a thin strip of grass and a stream situated between the canyon walls. Balanced Rock Park has a picnic shelter, a playground and restrooms. The picnic area is located at the base of the rock. It can hold about six cars and has a few trails that lead up the hill. The climb to the rock takes between ten and fifteen minutes. The view from the base of the surrounding area is breathtaking.

By climbing above Balanced Rock you can reach the rim of the canyon. This is another area with a spectacular view. The entire area is a geographical rarity that has withstood time for the last 20,000 years.

Directions
The area can be reached from any Boise property, Eagle homes or Nampa real estate by taking Interstate 80 east. The drive will take about a half hour from Boise, Idaho to the park area. When you reach the Hagerman exit, get off the Interstate and then take Highway 30 southward to Buhl. Continue on, following the Balanced Rock signs along the way. The signs may be difficult to see so be sure to keep an eye out. There is no fee to enter Balanced Rock State Park or to park your vehicle.
