Backyard Entertaining

So, you’ve done it, you’re in your new home. You’ve signed all the papers, crossing the T’s and dotting the I’s. You’ve packed, loaded, moved, unloaded, and unpacked all your belongings; and now, you are ready to make your new home, your own. What are you going to do with your brand new home? Create the ultimate home theater system, add on to the second floor, or something else?

Whatever your grand schemes are for making your home your own, you might want to consider getting your backyard ready for those summer parties you’ve been dreaming about. Entertaining can be hard, there are a lot of things that go into making a great party; and ambiance, seating, and decorating are always a bit of an annoying part of it. However, with the right amount of preparation, you can make your backyard party ready almost all the time.

When it comes to decorating or renovating, or anything really, it is always good to go in with the end in mind. If you don’t go into your backyard renovation with your end goal in mind, you may just have a haphazard mess. So, the best thing to do is to plan out what you want to do in your backyard.

One of the classiest and most popular things you can do is to focus the energy on a fire pit. Fire pits are great for outdoor entertainment because it provides warmth, lighting, and can even mesmerize guests if they are not involved in good conversation or games. However, it is important to follow any and all safety protocols needed when you install and use a fire pit. It’s best to first check with your city fire department to check if it is legal to have a campfire in your backyard. If, and only if, it is legal for you to have a fire pit, there are several different kinds that can come in different shapes and sizes. The most basic thing you can do is to buy several cinder blocks and a couple bags of gravel, lay the gravel down on some bare earth, and create a ring of cinder blocks the size you want your fire pit to be. (Be sure, however, to not build the ring to tall or too low. A good height for a fire pit would have to be about a foot and a half high.

Pools are another popular entertainment focus. Whether it be a hot tub, or a full on pool, water features can be a crowd favorite for backyard festivities. Again, there are many different kinds of pools; above ground, in ground, Jacuzzis, etc. Although, no matter which kind you are going for, make sure that you make it functional for any kind of guest you may have. This can be done by making sure there is a shallow end of some sort and that the steps into the pool are not steep or too difficult. Another thing to remember is to keep safety in mind. Be sure to have a fence of some kind put in around your pool to minimize the possibility of someone falling in unexpectedly. Lawn games can also be a hit at backyard parties. There are plenty of lawn games on sale on the internet. Or, if you want, there are also plenty of plans online to make your own lawn games at an inexpensive price. They don’t have to be complex, just fun. It would be wise, however, to avoid games like lawn darts, if those are even sold anymore, because they are a little dangerous to have lying around for people to use.

Seating is another great struggle when it comes to backyard fun. Seating can be achieved in a plethora of ways, but again you must come back to what they end goal is. If you want to entertain around the fire pit, put your seating around the fire pit. If the focus is lawn games, then maybe you will want a deck with chairs on it for people to spectate when they are not playing. It is good, however, no matter the end goal, to arrange your seating to make it easier for your guests to converse. If they can talk together, they will have a fun time.

Now, when it comes to choosing what kind of seating you want in your backyard, it is always good to make sure it matches the existing themes of the yard. You don’t want to have pool chairs around your fire pit, nor do you want stumps surrounding your pool. So it all depends on the theme and atmosphere of the yard. If you have a fire pit or yard games, you can go with things like benches, logs, stumps or typical lawn chairs. If you have a pool or Jacuzzi you can use lawn chairs as well, but you can also have pool chairs, tanning chairs, etc. Lawn games and pools can also easily use weatherproof tables and chairs for dining and socializing.

When you have your backyard parties or barbeques, it is also important to think about lighting. If you want something a little more elegant or intricate for your backyard, you may want to think about shying away from the traditional flood light. If you are looking for more natural mood lighting, you may consider using Tiki torches or any other kind of torch lighting (Like bottle lanterns, etc.). This kind of lighting can be great for creating a warm ambiance for more intimate gatherings. Holiday lights can also achieve a similar effect and will be half the cost as well as safer.

Decorating your backyard is the last step you should do, that way you will be able to see how your decorations will affect the ambiance and atmosphere of the final project. Decorating, however, is something that definitely comes down to your individual tastes and preferences. If you want an islander style backyard to match your Tiki torches, then maybe you should get some tropical plants and Tiki masks. But if you want a more simplistic and traditional backyard, you can go with lawn ornaments or decorative stones. It doesn’t matter really, as long as you like it.

So, now you are ready to start making yourself the ultimate backyard, and it will be party ready when you need it.
