Must Haves for a Contemporary Bathroom

We spend a lot of time in bathrooms. Getting ready in the morning, taking a shower, relaxing after a long day, or just getting away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the house. Why not make your bathroom a place that you enjoy going? It’s always said that kitchens sell the house. And that’s true. Kitchens are an important part of any home, and they tend to be where every gathers. But the bathroom is right up there too. Be honest, you like being able to sneak away to relax in the bathtub to get away from the rest of the house.

If you’re going to use your bathroom as a private oasis, it should look like one. And there’s one design style that delivers exceptionally well, and it even works regardless of whether you have a small bathroom or a large one. The contemporary style is very similar to the modern style, with one main difference. Contemporary designs use the most current materials and technologies. They also use older materials, but in a new and fresh way. Contemporary bathrooms are like modern bathrooms, in that simplicity is the name of the game. Clean and angular lines combined with fresh materials creates a contemporary paradise you’ll fall in love with.

The Must Haves

While every contemporary bathroom will be different, there are some big must haves for the contemporary design. This design is all about using space, and using it well, by accenting with clean lines and absolute simplicity. Current materials, like plastics, glass, and metals will make your bathroom stand out.

Must Have #1- Backsplash

Backsplashes serve a couple of purposes. Mainly, it helps contain splashing water from the sink, and makes it easier to clean. From a style standpoint, however, backsplashes can make a bold statement and really up the visual appeal of your bathroom. Contemporary designs are simple, not boring. Subway tiles work great, because of the neat lines, but you can still make interesting designs. Glass tiles are a great accent, and a much needed pop of color. Or bring wood in, and create an elegant backsplash that will blend nicely with your contemporary design.

Must Have #2- Sleek Finishes

You won’t want to use anything too ornate, as that goes against the contemporary design. But metal handles or fixtures, like stainless or brushed aluminum, can go a long way in tying your bathroom together. The faucet’s also a good place to bring in some color. Get creative, but keep it simple.

Must Have #3- Handling Your Linens

In a contemporary design, it’s better to hide than to show. But, if space doesn’t allow that, or if you prefer a more open look with shelving, keep your linens simple. Don’t go for anything too detailed. This can be great place to bring in some color if you want to show off your linens as well. For a contemporary design, you want simplicity, clean lines, and texture. Splashes of color can add that texture.

Must Have #4- Geometry

While you want clean and angular lines in your contemporary bathroom, that doesn’t mean all of the lines have to be going in the same direction. Get creative with shapes. Angular bathtubs and vanities can be complemented by round sinks and lights. Blend subtle curved edges in with the simple lines.

Must Have #5- Something Old

Not everything in your contemporary has to be new and current. Woods make great accent pieces, but you won’t want the wood to be the main material in your bathroom. A bamboo accent around a mirror is a great finishing detail, if it fits with your contemporary design. Otherwise, glass and metals are great details as well. Remember, contemporary designs incorporate old materials, just in a new and exciting way. This can be a great time to let your creative spirit run wild.

Must Have #6- Lights

Avoid harsh lights. Otherwise, your bathroom might look too sterile and cold. Accent and ambient lighting can do a lot for a contemporary bathroom, and the light fixtures themselves can add an extra layer of texture and contrast to your design. You can even bring in modern lighting to add that extra little bit of finish to your bathroom. Complement the other shapes in your bathroom with your lighting fixtures. If there are a lot of straight lines, use rounded fixtures to add contrast.
