The Boise Idaho School District, is officially known as the Independent School District of Boise City. It is the second largest school district in the state after the Meridian School District. The school district serves 25,000 students in just under 50 schools.
One advantage for parents looking at homes in the Boise area is that the school district offers a parent education program. This program is designed to give parents and guardians the support and skills that they need to raise happy and responsible families in the community. They offer several different classes pertaining to drug and other substance abuse as well as a Parenting with Love & Logic Class.
The high schools offer 12 athletic programs, many of which rank at the state level every year. The high schools also offer a handful of athletic activities, including lacrosse, ice hockey, skiing, and swimming.
In addition to athletics, the Boise District offers cheer-leading, speech, dance, and orchestra. Boise's highest orchestra has received several awards and won multiple competitions at the national level. They are frequently asked to attend international music festivals and to perform at the National Music Educators Conference.
The district also offers after school programs, driver's education, dual language problems, English Language Learners programs, gifted services, homeless services, special education services,and summer programs.

The Boise District consists of 31 elementary schools, 8 junior high schools, and 6 high schools. Four of the high schools are traditional and two are alternative. The district also has two joint district facilities, Dennis Technical Education Center and Treasury Valley Mathematics & Science Center, as well as a language academy and an early childhood center.

The district has 1,700 certified teachers and 1,200 non-certified staff members.

The Boise District has 43% free and reduced lunch students in grades 1-6. The district consists of 83% white, 9% Hispanic, and 8% black, Asian, and Native American ethnicity. They serve just under 1,850 limited English proficient students.

Boise High consistently ranks in the top high schools list in Newsweek every year, above all other schools in Idaho. In 2008, Boise High had 453 students who took over 1,000 advanced placement (AP) exams with 86% scoring a 3 (out of 5) or higher. In 2009, the sophomore through senior classes at Boise High all averaged 3.25 GPAs or higher.
