Idaho's National Parks

Posted by Kevin Hughes on Monday, June 20th, 2011 at 9:45am.

Idaho WildlandsOne of the most obvious reasons to buy Idaho real estate is the natural beauty found in the surrounding areas. In fact, a person buying Idaho land is within easy reach of four of America's greatest national parks.

·         Yellowstone National Park (take I-20 up into Yellowstone's western entrance, then into Wyoming next door, and there's Old Faithful!)

·         Nez Perce National Historical Park (13 mile drive from Lewiston)

·         City of Rocks National Reserve (39 mile drive from Twin Falls)

·         Craters of the Moon National Monument and Reserve (18 mile drive from Arco)

Yellowstone National Park
Even though Yellowstone is just next door, Idahoans don't have to cross state lines to enjoy nature. Of the 27 national forests in the Greater Yellowstone Region, 12 can be found on Idaho land. Idaho real estate becomes more and more appealing at every turn for nature lovers. A person can get up close and personal with wildlife in Rexburg, home of Yellowstone Bear World.

The natural beauty in the area is obvious, but there is cultural beauty as well. Summer in Yellowstone National Park is affectionately referred to as “Indian Summer.” Yellowstone is host to many First Nations gatherings including Eastern Shoshone Indian Days, Northern Arapaho events, the Plains Indian Museum Powwow, the Valley of the Chiefs Powwow and Rodeo, and many others.

Idaho Sunset in ColorNez Perce National Historical Park
The Nez Perce National Historical Park sprawls over four states, one of them being Idaho. Idaho has of 23 the 38 sites. Here are just a few:

·         Heart of the Monster: According to the Nez Perce account of creation, the birthplace of the Nez Perce people was on Idaho land, right here at Heart of the Monster.

·         Lewis and Clark Long Camp: Lewis and Clark camped here with the Nez Perce people for over a month.

·         White Bird Battlefield: This was the location of the first battle of the Nez Perce War

City of Rocks National Reserve
This is a climber's paradise. Here, beautiful granite monoliths tower, some of them over 60 stories tall. This has been a stop for many a traveler over the years. In fact, on close inspection, graffiti from the mid-1800's can be spotted on some of the granite.

Craters of the Moon National Monument and Reserve
Idaho's calm surface belies its violent geologic past. Craters of the Moon is safe for exploration now, but walking through a lava tube is a great reminder that solid Idaho land was once flow of molten lava. This is a great place for people who love exploring caves.

When buying Idaho real estate, a person is buying much more than land or a house. With such richness in history and so much to do and see, Idaho is full of adventure and surprises!
