o its children and its communities.According to the U. S. Department of Agriculture, good nutrition is essential for children to do well in school. This is the basis for the school programs that provide reduced-price breakfasts and lunches throughout the school year. This helps the children, particularly those from low-income families, to have the energy and concentration to do well in classes.
Summer Time Issues
Unfortunately, these school programs are not available during summer vacation. According to the U. S. Department of Agriculture, this puts the children that use these programs at risk of not receiving the proper nutrition for three months. Among other things, this can lead to poor performance at the beginning of each school year.
Boise and Meridian home owners aware of this problem became concerned about the welfare of Idaho's children and the Idaho government responded. The Idaho Foodbank established the annual Picnic in the Park Program in answer.
Picnic In The Park
This program runs every year from June 6 until August 17 and began in the Boise and Meridian school districts. It provides a free lunch for any child, ages 1-18, with no exceptions. No paperwork is required. In addition, to promote community and family, the Idaho Foodbank provides meals for the parents as well for $1 each. This allows the parents to have family meals with their children promoting a more tight-knit community and family atmosphere.
Over the past years, there have been 18 Picnic in the Park sites in the Boise and Meridian area, ten of which are mobile. Redwood Park in Boise, ID has received such a large response to this program that it was changed from a mobile station to a stationary site in the first week. It serves an average of 130 meals per day. The sites, both mobile and stationary, are usually located at parks, schools, and apartment complexes or mobile home parks.
This program has been so successful and received enough support from Idaho home owners that it was able to spread into other communities..
Program Expansion
The number of meals provided through Picnic in the Park doubled in just one year. For 2011, each site recorded a 100% increase on average when compared to the previous year. The Idaho Foodbank continues to expand upon its efforts to provide more services through-out Idaho communities.
According to information provided by the Boise and Meridian school district, over 10,000 children are signed up for the school year lunch programs. Its Picnic in the Park's goal to provide the same number of meals in the summer as are needed during the school year.
