Lemhi County, Idaho Homes and Lifestyle
The individual interested in purchasing real estate in Lemhi County, Idaho is advised to consider this: With a population of under ten thousand people, the average population density is about two (2) people per square mile. With less than five thousand housing units spread across the county,, there is only a single housing unit per square mile. Of the six townships that comprise Lemhi County, the town of Salmon, the county seat, has the largest population, a whopping 3,300. For someone wanting to get away from it all to build a new life, Lemhi County real estate is inviting indeed.
Challis, Salmon and Targhee National Forests encompass much of the spatial dimensions of Lemhi County. As well, numerous streams. lakes. ponds and rivers dot the landscape, offer some of the best salmon, trout and small-mouth bass fishing in the entire country, especially the famous steelhead trout. For hunters, almost every major species of trophy wildlife is found in Lemhi County, and the area is almost as famous for its hunting opportunities, as its fishing ones. For whitewater rafting, the famed Salmon River (Lewis and Clark dubbed it "The River of No Return."), offers an incomparable and thrilling experience.
For the prospective real estate purchaser, Lemhi County, Idaho offers a very special sense of history, a link to old-time gold mining, the Lewis and Clark expedition, and also the home of Sacajawea, the Shoshone Indian girl who served as guide and interpreter for Lewis and Clark. Once upon a time, a hotbed for gold miners, Lemhi County towns sprung up quickly - mushrooms after a rainstorm - then disappeared just as suddenly when the mines produced no more. Leesburg, just west of Salmon, produced over $40 million from its gold mine; today Leesburg is a ghost town, ruins, mainly, just an interesting memory. Other towns - Gilmore, its old hotel still standing, Nicholia, once with 1500 residents, now a memory dotted with remnants of charcoal kilns, Gibbonsville, notable for the relics of its once-thriving mining town - all ghost towns, now, eerily peaceful nonetheless, each offer atmosphere and character, a personal communion with history, with a time gone by. Lemhi County is a great place to buy Idaho real estate.
