Kootenai County, Idaho Homes and Lifestyle
Activities in Kootenai County
The largest city in Kootenai County is Coeur d’Alene, which offers a wide range of dining, entertainment, and shopping. Kootenai County real estate is in high demand because of the available amenities. Only a few miles from Spokane, Washington, out-of-town visitors easily reach Coeur d’Alene by airplane, train, or car. Dining ranges from upscale or budget-friendly, and with the abundance of fresh, local ingredients, diners enjoy menus featuring salmon, huckleberries, microbrew beer, and exceptional regional wines -- not to mention Idaho potatoes! Coeur d’Alene also boasts an active cultural scene, including art galleries, a summer theater, an opera house, and the Lake City Playhouse, a year-round community theater.
Other, smaller communities have much to offer, as well. Post Falls has the Stateline Stadium and Speedway for racing fans. Hayden hosts a seasonal farmer’s market featuring locally grown produce. Several cities offer a true slice of small-town life with populations under 1,000.
Families in Kootenai County love the easy proximity to theme parks like Wild Waters Water Park, Silverwood Theme Park, and the Triple Play Family Fun Park. And adults appreciate the abundance of lovely and challenging golf courses in the area, not to mention the Coeur d’Alene Casino and Resort offers live concerts in addition to games of chance.
Outdoor Recreation
There are 55 lakes within easy driving distance of Coeur d’Alene, along with Lake Coeur d’Alene itself, all of which offer widespread opportunities for fishing, boating, and other water pursuits. For those who prefer dry land, hiking, mountain biking, and hunting abounds. At Silver Mountain, the world’s largest gondola draws attention from skiers and snowboarders, but it’s also a favorite summer attraction for mountain bikers, who take their bikes to the top, explore the many trails available, and then coast down to the base of the mountain. The Idaho Centennial Trail is popular with hikers, who can traverse from the Washington state line to the shores of Lake Coeur d’Alene. Lookout Pass Ski Area is a must-visit during winter, but in the off-season, they maintain the Route of the Hiawatha rail-to-trail mountain bicycle trails, which are known as some of the most spectacular in the world, taking people over high trestles and deep into tunnels along rivers and through mountains.
