Area Information
Situated in the Boise Basin,
Placerville is located on one of
the Basin's main roads. It is 36 miles north of Boise,
sitting between Idaho City
and Garden Valley.
Due to its location, during the gold rush heyday in 1863, Placerville had a population of over 5,000. In fact, the town's name comes from the placer gold mining which was done in this vicinity. Soon after the population began growing, mining for quartz also was found to be quite good in the area. The fire of 1899 nearly destroyed the town.
Today, some might consider Placerville a bit of a ghost town, with a population of less than 70 residents as of 2011. According to many, several of the former mining towns within a 50 mile radius fit into this category of "ghost town," including Mountain Home.
Placerville is a quiet, safe and beautiful place to live that's rich with history. It's home to many animal species, including deer, wild turkey and elk. There are several small streams and beaver ponds nearby, many of which provide great trout fishing.
The majority of the working population commute over 30 miles to their places of employment. The median age of the residents is about 55 years of age.
Neighborhoods and
Parks
The city is incorporated and governed by a mayor and the city council, which
holds regular meetings at City Hall. Placerville
has its own fire department.
There are two city museums, which are maintained by volunteers and public donations. These are open on weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and upon special request.
The settled areas of the city have been designated as an historic district.
Hot Springs Campground is located in nearby Garden Valley, within an hour's drive of Placerville. Other parks and beautiful outdoor locations include Eagle Island State Park, and of course, Boise features many parks including Ann Morrison Park, Julia Davis Park and others.
Nearby Shopping
Village Market is a local convenience store, and Placerville
has a florist, some gift boutiques and other shopping options. Of course, you
can find nearly anything under the sun (or at least what your heart desires) by
venturing over to Boise. Garden
City and Eagle also have great places to shop.
So if you're seeking countrified tranquility and beauty, along with friendly neighbors, but want to be within an easy commute of city amenities, we hope you'll consider Placerville as your new home. Placerville homes offer great opportunities if you're in the market for some Idaho real estate. And we'd be proud and happy to call you our neighbor!
