Area Information
This city, with a population of approximately 7,000, began as a logging community. However, the last sawmill closed in 1977 and it has since completed its transformation into a tourist destination. This thriving town is located near the center of the Payette National Forest. Its first resorts were built along the Payette lake. In addition, it is the home of the McCall smokejumper base, one of only eight in the nation.
Neighborhoods and Parks
Being in the center of a national forest gives any nature lover plenty to do and see all year round. Some of the largest old growth trees in the United States can be found in McCall.
The lake opens up even more opportunities for residents that enjoy the outdoors, offering boating, fishing, and swimming. Skiers will appreciate the long winters and the area is known both for the highest average snowfalls in the state.
Nearby Shopping
Local shopping includes plenty of gift shops such as the Granite Mountain Nature Gallery that specializes in nature related products. These range from fossils to jewelry framed insects to finished rock carvings. A trip to the store for candy can turn into even more at the Roseberry General Store which has been at the same site since 1905. This store includes a museum which shows dry goods exhibits along with its old style candy barrels. For dining, there's plenty of grills as well as a sushi bar with a lake view. The Sushi Bar, also, has an extensive microbrew sake and wine selection.
McCall has several art organizations for artists and musicians to become active in. Every winter is the Winter Carnival for which the town is known for and they can always use more volunteers. As expected, there are many organizations and clubs for outdoor activities year round including the McCall Hiking Club.
Idaho home buyers looking for an outdoor oriented lifestyle will find this tourist town a good fit.
