Orofino Real Estate... Browse by Zip - 83544

Orofino's name means “fine gold” in Spanish. The town has a population of 3,247 as of the 2000 census, and is the county seat of Clearwater County. 69.3% of households in Orofino are occupied by families, compared to the 71.5% of households for all Idaho real estate. As of 2011 the cost of living index is 85.2, making it less expensive to live there than the US average of 100. Top employers in the area are the two correctional institutes: the Idaho State Hospital North and the Idaho Correctional Institution-Orofino. Because of the high school's proximity to these two institutions, the Orofino High School mascot is the “Maniac,” a mascot shared with only one other school in the United States. Orofino is also home to a well-known, annual long range precision rifle event known as the Boomershoot.

83544 Orofino Idaho Homes and Lifestyle

Idaho Park with a Beautiful TreeAge of homes
Orofino, located in Clearwater County, was established in 1896. Orofino homes are on average older and more established than is typical for the rest of Idaho's homes. A full 20% of Orofino properties were built before 1939, and the majority of Orofino homes were built in 1970 or earlier, making this town a great choice for those seeking historic Idaho homes. (Clearwater County is also home to many interesting and important historical landmarks.)

Home Values
The estimated median house value in 2009 was $111,583 for Orofino homes, making them much less expensive than the 2009 estimated median value of $171,700 for all Idaho homes. Orofino real estate values have decreased slightly over the last few years, along with home values all across Idaho-- the median sale price of Boise homes in 2010 was between $200,000 and $250,000, down from about $300,000 in 2008.

 Neighborhoods & Parks
Orofino lacks in city and neighborhood parks but makes up for this with the rich array of state parks and historical landmarks in Clearwater County and vicinity. American history buffs will be interested to learn of the town's proximity to the “Canoe Camp,” made famous by the Lewis and Clark expedition of 1805. Orofino is located near the Dworshak Dam, the third highest dam in the United States. The 53 mile Dworshak Reservoir is home to the annual Dworshak Dam Race. Also nearby is the Nez Perce National Historic Park, where visitors can immerse themselves in the tribe's history. Those who enjoy taking a scenic drive can make use of the Northwest Passage Scenic Byway, which runs from Lewiston, Idaho to Missoula, Montana. Orofino is also home to an excellent 9 hole golf course.

Nearby Shopping
Orofino contains two grocery stores, Glenwood IGA and Harvest Groceries, as well as a meat shop and several small jewelery and flower shops. For anything more than this, it is necessary to make a trip to Lewiston (approximately an hour away), where shoppers can find a Walmart, a Kmart and a Macy's, among smaller stores. Shoppers looking for high-end or niche goods will need to travel quite a distance, as the nearest large city is Walla Walla, Washington, nearly 3 hours away.
