At an elevation of 3980 feet, Elk City experiences a relatively mild mountain climate throughout the year, with an average temperature of 28 degrees F in January and 68 degrees in July.  Precipitation ranges from about 4.5 inches in November to just over an inch in July, while snowfall peaks at 12-14 inches in January.  During peak summer days in July/August, you can count on clear, sunny days about 80 percent of the time.  Wind velocities rate lower than the U.S. average, blowing an average of 8 mph at their peak in March-April.

Elk City is situated in Idaho County near the picturesque Nezperce and Bitterroot National Forests.  With a low population density of only one person per square mile, residents in this north central Idaho setting can indulge in a range of outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and ATV sports.

Elk City started out as a gold-mining camp near Big Elk Creek and grew into a thriving logging community.  Today, the town’s main industry is tourism and service-related businesses much like that of McCall, with an in-town population that fluctuates between 300-400, depending on the season.

Elk City Public School serves grades K-8th.  The nearest college is Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho, 79 miles away.  The University of Idaho, with an enrollment of about 9800, is located in Moscow, ID, 82 miles away. 

Neighborhoods and Parks 
Elk City features numerous outdoor recreational areas, including Cedar Grove Picnic Area; Salmon Wild and Scene River; Moose Meadow Creek Research Natural Area; Salmon River Breaks Primitive Area; Tom Beal Park; and many others.

Nearby Shopping
The largest shopping outlet is the mall at Big Mallard Creek Campground.  There are a few other boutiques and speciality stores along Main Street.
