Shoshone Real Estate... Browse by Zip - 83352

Shoshone, Idaho (population of 1,610) occupies a single square mile of land area in south central Idaho, yet carries enough clout to be the county seat of Lincoln County.  Shoshone the town, derives its name from the indigenous Shoshone tribes of the area, although the name  is most properly pronounced show-shown, instead of the expected show-show-nee.  Envisioned as a railway stopover, the town was established in 1882.  In less than one year, construction began on the Union Pacific Oregon Short Line Railway station, justifying the foresight displayed by the town's founders.

83352- Shoshone Idaho Homes and Lifestyle

Rustic Fence near Idaho Real EstateAge of Homes
As one of Idaho's oldest towns, it is hardly surprising that the average age of homes in Shoshone, Idaho is somewhat more established than the rest of Idaho.  In the twenty-two years since 1990, a mere fifty-four new homes  constructed.  From 1980-89, only about a dozen new homes were built.  By contrast, the decade of the 1970's witnessed about 115 new houses built;  180 homes were built in the 1960's, 140 in the 1950's, 25 in the 1940's, and a whopping 130 (1 in 5 existing homes in Shoshone) were constructed before 1940.

Home Values
Home values in Shoshone are a modest $107,325 on average as of June, 2011, far below the average standard value of the rest of Idaho ($171,710).  A positive sign however, is that Shoshone home values were a mere $71800 in the year 2000.  For an eleven year period, such an increase is quite significant.

Area Information
Small, rustic, and friendly, Shoshone is, like most of Idaho, home to a significant population of caucasions (69%),  Like many of the small southern Idaho towns, there is a significant percentage of Basque heritage in the genetic makeup of Shoshone residents.  The median age of the town's residents is 36.5 years, which is about three years higher than Idaho, in general.  A major industry of Shoshone is dairy farming, whereby many of the residents earn their paychecks.  Also important is the construction industry.

Neighborhoods and Parks
Shoshone has one small park, Mary L. Gooding Memorial Park, through which the area's only water body, Little Wood River, meanders.  This charming park plays host every second Sunday in July to The Old Time Fiddlers' Jamboree.  Also within the small boundaries of Shoshone are the Lincoln County Fairgrounds.

Special places to visit in the Shoshone area, are the nearby Ice Caves, cold enough year round to keep the cave frozen.  The "Magic Reservoir", so named because of its overwhelming and spectacular facade, is a must-see for anyone coming to the town.  Many visitors pass through Shoshone on their way to the Sawtooth Mountains, or to go to the very famous Sun Valley (75 miles), the northwest's most famous winter sportsman's paradise.  Idaho's capitol, Boise City, is about 118 miles north and west of Shoshone.

Nearby Shopping
There is no rule against it, but it is nonetheless true, that people do not move to Shoshone for the shopping .  Perhaps that is because there simply is little.  Those with a desire to shop until they drop are best advised to head to Sun Valley.

Whether you choose Shoshone for you new Idaho home or another Idaho community, you will be sure to find beautiful views, awesome communities, and an overall great feeling about this area.
